"I just don't find relaxing that relaxing."

that's from the bearded gayguy on last week's Modern Family, the second-funniest sitcom after The Big Bang Theory. sitting by the pool doing nothing on vacation sounded horrible to him.

i was just talking to a friend about this yesterday. he diagnosed me with Restless Leg Syndrome of the brain. (his version was slightly unfunnier.)

he noticed that i was not reveling in my book's success very much--always 43 new little projects to keep it going. i don't know how to revel. or vacate. or relax without doing something.

  1. I have been yelled at in the past to "Relax!" It doesn't work. Today at my high school, the music teacher led 5 of us in a 1-minute mindfulness meditation exercise. One student had missed his lecture to her world religions class, so she'd requested the lesson. A teacher said, "You're meditating?" and sat down to join us. It was unexpected, fun, and something that only happens when school is almost over and the atmosphere is more relaxed.

  2. Part of me feels jealous...but not jealous enough to forsake my procrastinating tendencies forevermore. I suppose you could remind your friend that this tendency of yours probably played into the unique accomplishment of completing a book and getting it published.
