The authors of the NurtureShock blog at Newsweek asked me to address that question as a guest blogger on their. site. My post is now on their blog and the Newsweek homepage here.
I will follow up here with a related idea here soon. (Hopefully Saturday: I'm giving to presentations at an academic conference on school shooters in Finland in a few hours.)

Dave, your Columbine book was the best. Please consider reporting/writing on Fort Hood. Like Columbine, we all need to learn from this tragedy to take steps to prevent another ... and you are the primo fact sifter to guide us. As a writer, you must feel the tug to write because of the eerie irony that you were an hour away in Austin just days before the tragedy. Mary
Excellent post on NurtureShock. I suspect that since you're an "expert" on mass shootings most people would hope that you have those answers as to why it happened. But you were very clear in your message that what we've learned from Columbine and others is that facts don't present themselves immediately. I think the media has done quite well so far.
Thanks for the level-headed blog. Yours is the second one I've read on this tragedy. The other opinion piece I read was by David Brooks of the New York Times. Lots of facets of this to wonder about. And like you suggest, we'll be wondering for years to come.
